Why I Write Flawed Musicians
Music can express the things people are unable to say plainly. That is what draws me to musicians as characters: they can expose their deepest emotions in front of thousands of strangers and still struggle to tell one person the truth.
My heroes are not damaged because pain makes cruelty romantic. Their stories are about what happens when pain becomes an excuse, a shield, or a pattern—and whether they are willing to break it.
The women who love them are not rewards waiting at the end of that transformation. They have needs, boundaries, ambitions, and wounds of their own. Love may give these characters a reason to change, but they still have to choose honesty, accountability, and healing for themselves.
That is what makes their happily-ever-afters feel earned.
